At symposium, G20 Brasil seeks to deepen the debate on fair international taxation
International event in Brasilia brings together experts and representatives of international organizations and G20 member countries to debate strategies for combating inequalities and financing actions against hunger and poverty, highlighting the importance of robust tax cooperation.

The Brazilian G20 presidency has been promoting a new model of international taxation as a priority agenda for combating inequalities and funding global hunger and poverty relief efforts. To encourage experts and representatives from the forum's member countries to engage with this proposal, the Finance Track is organizing an international seminar in Brasilia from May 21 to May 23.
"We are convinced that, from a solid technical base, it is possible to join forces to improve our tax systems, thus creating an additional fiscal space to finance more resilient structures, invest in sustainable development, fight hunger and poverty and promote other national priorities," said ambassador and coordinator of the forum's financial debates Tatiana Rosito, at the opening of the event.
According to Rosito, the debates will be guided by a diverse and collaborative agenda, including topics that are important to the world's largest economies. Delegations will have ample opportunity to present contemporary local tax challenges while also encouraging debate and idea exchanges that will be used to draft a G20 declaration on international taxation.
"Our vision is to use the declaration to renew our collective political commitment to fairer taxation and enhanced international cooperation, putting this important issue at the top of the international agenda. I believe we have a golden opportunity in our hands to make a real difference," said the ambassador.
Adriana Gomes Rêgo, undersecretary-general of the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service, pointed out that the debates will be fundamental for reflecting on what is at the forefront of the relation between taxation, inequality and economic growth and "how these questions can be posed by different countries, how municipal policies can impact income inequality and economic growth", she exemplified. "We believe that the event will be rich in debates and we have very positive expectations about its results, so that it can serve as a basis for discussions between the G20 countries," she concluded.

Notable names in international taxation
The event will feature tax experts as keynote speakers, including representatives from international organizations, the European Union, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank - IDB, and G20 member countries. Brasil, the United Kingdom, Norway, France, India, Australia, and South Africa will present their successful progressive taxation models.
The event will close with a talk by Gabriel Zucman, a French economist, on an innovative proposal to discuss how global tax systems can make it easier for the super-rich to avoid paying taxes, as well as the implications for deepening inequalities and the corrosion of democracies around the world.
The event is limited to invited guests and will not be broadcast online.
