Brasil announces priorities during the presidency of the Anti-Corruption WG of the G20
The group is set to formulate anti-corruption principles and standards that strengthen the implementation of international instruments, particularly the United Nations Convention against Corruption
Brasil announced its priorities at the presidency of the Anti-Corruption Working Group (GTAC) of the G20 during the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (COSP) in Atlanta, USA, on this Wednesday (13). The Group will be co-chaired by France.
During the event, Elizabeth Cosmo, the Special Advisor for International Affairs at the Comptroller General's Office (CGU), highlighted that corruption distorts public policies and private activities and impacts the most vulnerable. She emphasized that advancing justice, reducing inequalities, and promoting sustainable development across all levels are core values within the thematic priorities of the Working Group. In line with the priorities set by President Lula for Brasil's presidency of G20.
The GTAC is tasked with formulating anti-corruption principles and standards that reinforce the implementation of key international instruments, especially the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
The primary objectives include:
Contributing to a fair world and sustainable planet through the promotion of integrity and anti-corruption mechanisms,
Encouraging comprehensive and cohesive integrity measures within the private sector to prevent and combat corruption,
Enhancing the institutional organization of public administration to strengthen public integrity,
Utilizing all available tools for asset recovery, including direct measures in foreign jurisdictions and ensuring national coordination for effective asset recovery
During the Conference, Brasil obtained broad support from members for the announced priorities. They expressed willingness to collaborate with the country and praised the chosen themes. France highlighted the significance of this partnership with Brasil leading the Group.
Throughout 2024, the Working Group's agenda includes several meetings, notably three technical sessions scheduled for March 24-26 in Brasília, June 25-27 in Paris, and October 22-23 in Salvador. Additionally, the Group will participate in the Ministerial meeting set for October 24 in Salvador, capital of Bahia.
Alongside the ministerial declaration, the expected outcomes of the GTAC's work comprise a high-level principles document, a report detailing member countries' activities regarding previously undertaken commitments and parallel events.
