Global Agriculture and Food Security Program to invest more than US$180 million in support of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

The Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP) will increase support for small producer organizations in low-income countries. It also plans to launch a new call for proposals to benefit family farming projects in 2025. The Alliance already has the support of Germany, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), among others.

Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP) has pledged up to US$182 million in funding for the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. GAFSP will participate in the Global Alliance area focused on programs to support small and family farming, which will take place during the Social Summit in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The area is a space for strengthening national programs in developing countries, improving quality through additional expertise, and co-financing the implementation of national policies to empower small and family farming, increasing investments as necessary.

According to the project director, Camila Costa, of the Ministry of Finance, “the Global Alliance welcomes the upcoming partnership with the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program. Together, we can ensure that countries facing the highest levels of food and nutrition insecurity can find solutions - and that international partners are aligned with their own goals to tackle hunger, malnutrition, and multidimensional rural poverty.”

As the United Nations Decade of Family Farming enters its next phase, GAFSP will continue to increase its direct support for small producer organizations in low-income countries. It plans to launch a new call for proposals in 2025 to benefit projects led by producer organizations focused on implementing, improving, or expanding support services for smallholder members. It will also enable more private and climate financing for small and family farming in low-income countries, particularly through a new US$75 million financing window called the Business Investment Financing Track (BIFT).

The Program is the only multilateral financing and partnership platform focused on food and nutrition security. It has a global portfolio of US$2.5 million that benefits more than 20 million people in 55 low-income countries.

Alliance Partners

Germany was the first G20 country to join the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, which also has the support of the Rockefeller Foundation and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), the latter being the first multilateral financial institution to take part, as well as other banks.
