On May 1st, 2024 the G20 will hold its first event to debate and promote the issue of Information Integrity. The goal of the meeting is to combat threats toward democracy, which has been under attack around the globe through hate speech and misinformation.

Organized by the G20 Brasil Digital Economy Working Group, the event proposes to approach the social and political impacts of the advancement of digital technologies, focusing on information integrity. The seminar will be held in São Paulo, following the NETMundial+10, and will combine restricted meetings for the G20 engagement groups and an event open to the public.

Among the speakers, significant names in the field of information integrity have already been confirmed, such as the Philippine journalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa and Christophe Deloire, executive director of the international organization Reporters Without Borders. The goal is to gather different perspectives to build multilateral dialogues to conceptualize information integrity and make it operational.

Representatives of the United Nations (UN), including Tawfik Jelassi, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information. He is in charge of programs related to the construction of inclusive knowledge societies, leading digital transformation, outlining strategies for the role of information technologies and communication in education, and promoting freedom of expression.

The UN subsecretary general for Global Communications, Melissa Fleming, journalist and head of Global Communications and the Spokesperson of the High Commissioner’s Office, will also speak at the event. She has led global awareness campaigns through mass media, engagement on social networks, and a multimedia news service to distribute and disseminate stories aimed at fostering empathy and stimulating actions in support of refugees. Another speaker will be Elsa Pilichowski, Public Governance Director of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), who has dedicated over 20 years to public governance at OECD and partner countries.

This year, NETMundial celebrates its 10th anniversary. Having first been held in Brasil in 2014, the seminar marked a moment of global reflection on Internet governance. The NETMundial+10 was proposed by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (Comitê Gestor da Internet do Brasil - CGI.br) and will be held on April 29 and 30. The initiative aims to generate yet another opportunity for stakeholders to update their knowledge regarding the issues presented during the first edition in the face of the challenging panorama that presents itself ten years later. The seminar will be followed by the G20 Side Event, both to be held in São Paulo.
