Lula discusses priorities at G20 with IMF and Asian Investment Bank

The President discussed the reform of global governance with the heads of multilateral financial institutions and defended investments to promote social inclusion and combat poverty. The meetings happened in Brasilia on Monday (4/3) and were attended by Fernando Haddad, Minister of Finance, and Dilma Rousseff, President of the NDB.

Sustainable development, social inclusion, combating poverty and reforming global governance, key themes of Brasil's presidency of the G20, guided the meetings between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Kristalina Georgieva, director-general of the International Monetary Fund; com and Jin Liqun, president of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Dilma Rousseff, president of the Novo Banco de Desenvolvimento (NDB); and Fernando Haddad, Brasil's Finance Minister, took part in the meetings with the heads of multilateral financial institutions.

Jin highlighted his desire to expand investment links with Brasil and Latin American countries, with an emphasis on climate change mitigation, adaptation and private sector development. The head of the AIIB also committed to supporting the Brazilian government in carrying out projects in the areas of infrastructure and transportation.

"Anything that is important for this country will be for our work. We came here to listen to your government and your people. We would like to know what you wish this bank to do for you. And we are ready to provide a large amount of resources for your country," Jin Liqun said enthusiastically.

“Qualquer coisa que seja importante para este país será para o nosso trabalho. Viemos aqui para ouvir o seu governo e o seu povo. Gostaríamos de saber o que você deseja que este banco faça por você. E estamos prontos para fornecer uma grande quantidade de recursos para o seu país”, salientou Jin Liqun. 

Georgieva congratulated President Lula and Minister Haddad on their G20 Finance Track meetings, held last week in São Paulo. The head of the IMF also highlighted that the institution has expanded loans to countries in the Global South during the Covid-19 health emergency. "We have lent to developing countries on an unprecedented scale, including concessional loans to more than 40 countries during my mandate," pointed out.
