El G20 participa en la elaboración de documentos sobre la inclusión social, el acceso al agua y al saneamiento básico para el desarrollo

En Salvador, Bahía, el Grupo de Trabajo sobre Desarrollo avanzó en la creación de políticas de inclusión de minorías y financiamiento para el saneamiento básico. También se debatió sobre la promoción de la igualdad étnico-racial y la inclusión de diversos grupos sociales. La expectativa es presentar un documento final en julio.

One of Brasil's challenges is to foster dialog between member countries, emphasized Celeste Badaró, coordinator of the G20 Development Working Group, which met this week in Salvador, the capital of Bahia. The diplomat pointed out that the forum made progress in developing policies for minorities’ inclusion; financing to improve access to water and basic sanitation; and expanding trilateral cooperation.

The debates focused heavily on sanitation and access to water, which is a challenge for all nations. "We decided to highlight the need for increased investment. We are negotiating a document that will allow G20 countries to call for more investment in the area, with a focus on local and isolated rural communities, as well as indigenous people, who are currently outside the sanitation network, in order to reach and include them,” explained Badaró.

The Brazilian presidency's plan is to engage different actors from civil society and local governments in order to make progress on this agenda, understanding the needs, challenges and capacities of each country. "The idea is that everyone participates and feels ownership of the process. It's something that's being built collectively. We believe that we have a better chance of achieving something that is sustainable and long-lasting,” he stated.

Inclusion for development

The Brazilian presidency brought to the G20 the commitment to make progress in fulfilling the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with emphasis on SDG 18 (Sustainable Development Goal), which was voluntarily instituted at Brasil's initiative, to promote ethnic-racial equality. “We are negotiating a document to bring political attention to the importance of promoting social inclusion policies for women, black people, people with disabilities, children and people living on the streets,” exemplified Badaró.

Badaró said that the debate was well received and that the WG will continue to discuss how to implement inclusion policies in line with the reality of the countries. "Everyone brings their own national perspective, which always requires negotiation, but we'll be able to build the document. It starts with everyone being able to contribute, each with different aspects based on their internal priorities to make a richer document, which is not just Brasil's perspective, but everyone's", he added.

According to the diplomat, the G20 delegations are committed to the final document that will be discussed by the Sherpas in July in Rio de Janeiro. There are some differences related to the local priorities of the member countries that will be debated at the group's next meetings.
